Why is microplastics
analysis neccesary?
Microplastics are a group of synthetic materials that are made from petroleum-derived or bio-based polymers.
They are tiny solid particles, less than 5 millimeters in size, which are not soluble in water and whose degradability is low.
They originate from the fragmentation of larger plastic objects or are manufactured on a microscopic scale into products such as cosmetics and textiles. Its analysis is necessary for the following reasons:
- Impact on marine life
- Human health risks
- Long-term ecological effects
- Pollution assessment
- Interaction with chemical contaminants
- Development of management policies
Our analysis mehods and equipment
At Eurofins Environment Testing Spain we use advanced analytical techniques to accurately characterize microplastics. We work with two main techniques:
Gas chromatography
This technique allows us to separate and analyze compounds from the thermal fragmentation of polymers present in the samples, resulting in accurate detection of microplastics in a variety of matrices.
Infrared spectroscopy (ATR)
Our reports provide a count and mass concentration. In addition to the separation of the particles between 250 and 5 mm, we characterize them.

R+D: µNanocare Project
At Eurofins Environment Testing Spain we are always committed to innovation. This is where µNanocare was born, a project that is part of the Spanish programme ‘Collaboration Challenges’ 2019, in which we work in collaboration with the Castellonense Agricultural Development Society, FACSA and the IMDEA Water Foundation.
The aim of the μNanocare project is to quantify the presence of microplastics in reclaimed water and agricultural systems. An initiative to improve wastewater treatment systems.
